New Zealand-born Liam Lawson made his F1 debut with AlphaTauri, replacing Daniel Riccardo. The Australian racer injured his hand during the practice session of the Dutch GP. He has raced for the team since then and will probably make his final start this Sunday at the Qatar GP. Lawson has produced solid in his short spell, scoring maiden championship points and out-racing his teammate.

Despite the solid display, AlphaTauri overlooked the rookie and extended the contracts of Ricciardo and Yuki Tsunoda. This shocked him as even Daniel Riccardo failed to score points in the race while Lawson did. But there is a general consensus in the F1 garage that the Kiwi will be racing for a Red Bull team in 2025.

Looking at the current situation of Lawson, Red Bull motorsport advisor Dr. Helmut Marko has confirmed that the Kiwi will be racing in Formula 1 as a full-time driver from 2025. However, he also says there are ‘no guarantees’ over his future in Formula 1 as of now, something Christian Horner has also asserted.

Speaking with Kleine Zeitung, Marko commented, as reported by racingnews365.com, “With the role as a reserve driver, he has a big task next year, but by 2025 at the latest, he will be in a Formula 1 car anyway.”

Does Liam Lawson have what it takes to win a race?

By accumulating points so quickly in his career in Formula 1, Liam surely has the potential to win a race. Even Marko acknowledges the fact and says, “Lawson certainly has the potential to be a GP winner, as he has mastered all the tasks so far and in the most difficult conditions.”

He was literally thrown into the cold rain [at his Zandvoort debut],” says Marko on Lawson’s debut practice session at Zandvoort with AlphaTauri. He ironically spun out at turn 13 after replacing the Australian Riccardo.

Lawson being excluded from AlphaTauri as a primary racer for the next season is very disappointing because he seems capable of racing in a competitive vehicle in Formula 1. The Qatar GP this week is his final shot to prove himself and showcase his talent before Riccardo takes over the car again.
