“He’s going to have a seat shortly,” Esteban Ocon expresses confidence in Oscar Piastri’s abilities to bag a full time drive in F1 before long

Fernando Oscar Piastri, Alonso and Esteban Ocon

Oscar Piastri has been one of the finds of F1 in the recent past and Alpine was fortunate enough to get him to sign him as a reserve driver. But, a driver with the potential of Oscar Piastri wouldn’t want to sit on the sidelines and see the action unfold in front of him for long. That has started to become an issue for Alpine’s Team Principal, Otmar Szafnauer, as Oscar hunts for Fernando Alonso’s seat.

Oscar Piastri has been nothing short of a prodigy driver. He moved his way up to F1 after winning the F3 and F2 championships consecutively. He also signed as a reserve driver for McLaren in 2022 ahead of the Bahrin GP.

His signing has definitely brought about a dilemma for the team as there are two experienced drivers in Fernando Alonso and Esteban Ocon who are performing fairly well but on the other hand, you have this up and coming talent in Oscar Piastri who brings in a different sort or energy and excitement into the team. Alpine knows pretty well that they won’t be able to keep hold of him without giving him race time.

Esteban Ocon has particularly been very impressed with the youngster, at least on the face of it keeping in mind that his seat might be in danger. The Frenchman rates him highly and expressed that in his recent interview. He said, “He’s going to be probably the best prepared driver ever, with the test programme that he’s got at Alpine.”

“I’m very sure he’s going to have a seat in Formula 1 shortly. I don’t know where in the paddock, but opportunity comes for the ones who deserve it.”

“And Oscar is one of them. He’s won all the major titles and he’s very professional and dedicated. So yeah, I’m sure you will see him around pretty soon,” as quoted by motorsportweek.

Alpine will to have make up their mind pretty quickly about Oscar Piastri’s future with them or they could lose a gem without him even competing for them. The sharks are circling for Alpine and they need to be pro active in their decision making now more than ever.
