“Horrible situation” – Formula E racer finds similarities in Lewis Hamilton and the late Ayrton Senna’s grievances following safety car rule enforcement at Monza

The Italian Grand Prix last weekend was not short of excitement and drama, having a very anti-climatic ending. The drivers ended the race behind the Safety Car brought out on lap 39 due to Daniel Ricciardo’s crash. This incident reminded Lewis Hamilton of his title decider at Abu Dhabi last year.

In the 2021 title decider between Hamilton and Verstappen in Abu Dhabi, many expected the race to end behind the Safety Car, ultimately giving Hamilton the win. However, at the discretion of the race director Michael Masi, the safety car was about to end and the cars between Hamilton and Verstappen were allowed to unlap themselves. This decision in turn cost Hamilton his record-breaking 8th world title.

After Hamilton saw the FIA rule being applied correctly in Monza he took a subtle dig at last year’s decision and pointed out the difference in approach to last year, in the post-race interview he said, “There’s only one time in the history of the sport where they haven’t done the rules like that today.”

Sam Bird compares Lewis Hamilton’s situation with that of F1 legend Ayrton Senna

Hamilton and Senna

Formula E racer Sam Bird who currently races with Jaguar went on a podcast and talked about Hamilton situation after the Italian Grand Prix, he compared Lewis’ situation to that of F1 legend Ayrton Senna who lost his 1989 championship despite getting the win. He was disqualified in his last race for driving down the escape road in the final chicane and this in turn cost him the World Championship.

Bird in the podcast stated. “If they had followed the protocol correctly, he’d be an eight-time World Champion, to be honest, and Max Verstappen would be about to be a first-time World Champion, a very impressive first-time World Champion.”

Many drivers were unhappy with how the race ended and expected a different outcome. Many fans brought in their own speculations as to how the race should’ve ended, the only team that benefitted from this outcome was Red Bull as they secured the win for the first time in Monza.
