”I actually find it quite funny,” Max Verstappen opines on ‘points confusion’ post Japanese Grand Prix

Max Verstappen
Max Verstappen secured the 2022 F1 title at the Japanese GP and has recently talked about the confusion that was caused regarding the allotment of points after the race.
Max Verstappen took his 12th victory of the season when he crossed the Chequered flag in Japan, and as per the timing sheets, Charles Leclerc was second followed by Sergio Perez.
However, there was a lot of speculation at that time as no one was sure how many points were going to get allotted to the Top 10 finishers. The race was run only for half a distance and it put doubts in the minds of people whether Verstappen was going to be given the full 25 points or not.
After all the speculation it was made known that, because of a loophole in the FIA regulations, full points were awarded to the Top 10 finishers.

Moreover, Charles Leclerc was given a 5-second penalty for gaining an advantage by going out of the track and this meant that the Monegasque finished his outing in third and more importantly, handed Max Verstappen the 2022 F1 Championship.
Max Verstappen’s take on the confusion during the Japanese GP

When Max Verstappen won the race at Suzuka, the Red Bull camp was obviously ecstatic about it, however, despite being the first one over the line, the Red Bull garage had bemused faces as they were not sure how many points were going to get awarded to Verstappen.
The scenes were quite a watch, and Verstappen while talking about the points confusion said, “To be honest, I don’t mind that it was a little bit confusing, I find it actually quite funny because at the end of the day it’s not going to change the result.”
“When I crossed the line, it [the original result] was not enough, even if you would give full points. So, in that scenario, it wouldn’t have changed anything.”
With the Japanese GP done and dusted, Max Verstappen has won the 2022 F1 title with 4 races remaining and during the United States GP, his target is going to be to equal Michael Schumacher and Sebastian Vettel’s record of 13 race wins in a season.
