‘I believe in integrity’: Toto Wolff questions Oscar Piastri’s response to Alpine’s announcement of their driver line-up for 2023

For a month, Formula 1 fans everywhere’s eyes have been focusing on a certain saga between Oscar Piastri and Alpine. Alpine had announced Piastri as their replacement for Fernando Alonso, apparently without the Australian’s consent, even though Otmar Szafnauer had denied this. Piastri refused, and it began, culminating in an appearance between the FIA’s Contract Recognition Board on Monday.

The results are expected by Thursday. Recently, Christian Horner had conceded to being confused by this whole ‘mess’ surrounding Piastri’s future in the sport, also saying that: “Not being close to it, I don’t fully understand it because contractually, that should just never happen.” but he added that there must be a degree of loyalty for the faith teams show in young drivers.

Toto Wolff also thinks the same way: He doesn’t completely understand it either. As per Autosport, when asked about his thoughts on the current situation, he said he had better things to do with his time: “I have bigger problems than enjoy to sit on the balcony like in The Muppet Show to watch the show pan out in front of my eyes.”

Toto Wolff: “I don’t know the legal situation.”

Toto Wolff made it clear that he wasn’t entirely aware of the situation. However, part of his thoughts on the matter were rather clear. He does not understand why Oscar Piastri posted ‘that’ on Twitter, sending an indirect ‘warning’ his way regarding the same.

Despite him not being happy with Oscar Piastri’s Twitter declaration, he conceded that he does not know anything about what the contract(s) curtail: “I think it’s important that junior programmes are being respected. I think some of the kids should be wary on Twitter [of] what they said about multinational organisations. But I have no insight into the contracts.”

He concluded by saying: “I believe in karma, I believe in integrity. But I’m not here to judge because as I said, I don’t know the legal situation.”

If he is free of Alpine, he should presumably on his way to McLaren, as reports indicate. But even if there is a need for compensation or the contract is deemed valid, it’s hard to see him driving for Alpine next year, as the relationship may have soured to the point of no return. Daniel Ricciardo’s departure from the British team has opened up the gate for him. It’ll be interesting to see how this finally concludes.
