“I can’t drive the car how I want to in many ways” : Lando Norris is yet to get completely suited to the MCL36
Lando Norris in McLaren's MCL36
Despite his solid performances this season, Lando Norris says he still seems unable to drive his McLaren MCL36 the way he wants to. Norris is 7th in the championship after seven races, with more than 4 times the points of teammate Daniel Ricciardo. He stated that while he was satisfied with his own effectiveness, it did not suggest that the car was specifically tailored for him this year.
“I’m very happy with how I’m doing now. I’d say I’m a little bit surprised how well I’ve done in the last couple of weekends, with how I felt. But I’m understanding more and more about the car. It’s still a new car and it’s not just for Daniel. It’s not just for other people. It’s the same for everyone. There’s a lot of things I’ve had to try and readjust to this year,” said Norris.
The Briton went on to mention how he’s understanding things a bit more this season and how he’s learning a lot this season about various aspects of the MCL36 and the championship in general. He also deems the new MCL36 as somewhat of a fresh start for him and McLaren.
McLaren team principal Andreas Seidl evaluates Lando Norris’ performance
McLaren team boss Andreas Seidl stated that Norris’ achievements, particularly during the last two races while suffering from a serious case of tonsillitis, demonstrated why the team believed in the young Briton. He went on to mention how Norris has been blooming this season which is particularly why the Woking-based racing team signed the Briton for so many years. McLaren truly believes that there’s something special about the 22-year-old driver.
“He has everything he needs in order to become a great one in this sport and that’s obviously great to see for me, as being in charge of the team and and also how he pulled through these last two weekends with his illness as well was impressive,” added Seidl.
Lando Norris is still not entirely used to the MCL36:
"It's been a new car for me, new tyres, new set-ups, new everything. So in some ways, it's still like a new start for me…

“Coming here, being on it really from the first run onwards very pleasing to see. Not putting a foot wrong throughout the race was again an outstanding performance and I’m just happy to have him in place within the team for many, many more years,” concluded the German team principal.
