“I don’t believe Mercedes are a winning team”: Jean Alesi stays sceptical of the German team’s chances in F1 2022

At the very beginning of the current F1 2022 season, the Silver Arrows of Mercedes failed to yield their expected results as their W13 was in no way at par with Red Bull‘s RB-18 and Ferrari’s F1-75 in terms of speed and performance. But through the course of the Championship, Mercedes improved upon their previous mistakes by analyzing key results from the races where they had faultered, and then the Stuttgart-based team made significant progress in the last few races that took place before the summer break started.

Right before the first half of this year’s F1 season got over, the Hungarian Grand Prix brought loads of good news to Mercedes as the team landed their first double podium finish of this season. But even now, as Mercedes hope for bridging the gap between them and Ferrari, former Scuderia racer Jean Alesi gave his take on whether he thinks it would be possible for the German team to take over Ferrari. In the words of the veteran F1 racer, there is little chance that Mercedes will land in the second spot this year, even after vastly improving their form, since only nine races are remaining in the roster now.

According to Jean Alesi, the scenario that Mercedes will perform back-to-back miracles and bridge the gap of 30 points between them and Ferrari, seems quite unlikely. In a conversation with Give Me Sport, Alesi talked about the reasons why he believes Mercedes is not headed for the second spot in the Championship standings in this season. He said, “By experience when a car is born with problems, you’re not able to fix it. I don’t really believe they are able to be a winning team winning Grands Prix before the end of the championship under normal circumstances.”

As per the reports coming from Mercedes’ end, the team is currently vying for a Grand Prix victory in the next few races that will take place once the F1 season resumes after the summer break. The Silver Arrows hope to fetch some good points for the team at the upcoming Belgian Grand Prix, and they believe their performance will only go up from there.
