“I expected them to swap Max with Perez” : Tiff Needell claims that Max Verstappen had a fair shot at winning the Monaco GP

Red Bull’s Sergio Perez impressed at the Monaco Grand Prix, while teammate Max Verstappen had a quiet weekend. Former F1 driver Tiff Needell contends the Dutchman could have crossed the finish line before teammate Mexican driver Sergio Perez.
Max Verstappen would have probably had an easy win prior to the Monaco Grand Prix. After all, Red Bull Racing was already anticipating that Charles Leclerc would gain ground to Verstappen in the leaderboard, as it is practically impossible to outpace in Monaco’s rigid streets.
Sergio Perez eventually won thanks to Red Bull Racing’s wise move and Ferrari’s screwup. Former Formula One driver Tiff Needell, on the other hand, predicted that the Austrian team would favour reigning F1 World Champion Max Verstappen.

Tiff Needell surprised at Red Bull not giving team orders during the Monaco GP
“I expected them to swap Max with Perez earlier. It didn’t happen, but if they had, Max would have won the Monaco Grand Prix. Maybe Red Bull ruined it by not swapping them,” said Needell in a podcast.
It is plausible that negotiations concerning team orders were formed within Red Bull Racing following the Spanish Grand Prix. After all, Sergio Perez was upset during the race because he had to let Verstappen go abreast and then failed to reclaim the position. There was also a lot of debate among aficionados about the team orders in Barcelona.
Needell doesn’t comprehend Formula 1’s distaste to team orders. “You pay two drivers millions a year and they have to do what you say is good for the team,” concluded the British former F1 driver.
