“I have a contract!” Valtteri Bottas’ cheeky dig at Mercedes when asked if he would replace Sebastian Vettel at Aston Martin
Valtteri Bottas
Mercedes alum Valtteri Bottas is now signed with Alfa Romeo, and for the first time in what seems to be a long time for the Finn, he does not have to worry about getting a seat in any of the F1 teams as he is already confirmed to be staying in the Swiss team for the next season. While Bottas was still recruited under Mercedes, his contract was almost never renewed before summer and he was left in the dark about his future in F1. But now, the 32-year-old has another season to look forward to, thanks to his multi-year contract with Alfa Romeo.
During a driver press conference following the news about Sebastian Vettel’s sudden retirement from Aston Martin and thereby F1 at the end of 2022, the racers were asked if they would like to sign with Alfa Romeo as Vettel’s replacement. While most of the racers politely said no, Bottas had the boldest answer to the question. He took a little dig at his former employer Mercedes and said that he now has a fixed contract with Alfa Romeo and is presently not looking to switch teams.

It is no news that Mercedes has always given prime importance to Lewis Hamilton as their team leader and main driver, and whoever came in the seat beside the seven-time World Champion was never given the same preference. While Lewis has been linked to the Stuttgart-based team ever since 2013, the German manufacturer always kept Valtteri Bottas hanging for a contract renewal which came towards the later part of the season.

They all (politely) said no, but the best response was from Bottas:
“I never believed I’d say it, but I have a contract!”

This time, fortunately for Valtteri Bottas, he has a contract with Alfa Romeo in place and he is not uncertain about getting a seat in F1 in 2023. This, when the racer was asked if he would switch teams to go to Aston Martin in place of Sebastian Vettel in the new season, he said, “I never though I’d be saying this, but I already have a contact!”
