“I have the opportunity to be World Champion,” Sergio Perez clears out that he will not play second fiddle to Max Verstappen

Sergio Perez

Sergio Perez signed for Red Bull in 2021 and is in his second season with the Austrian constructor. The Mexican largely helped Max Verstappen to win the championship in 2021 but couldn’t help the team enough to win the constructors’ championship as well. At many times, Sergio is taken for granted as the second driver of Red Bull, but he won’t stand for it and has spoken out boldly.

Checo believes that he has been presented with an opportunity to win the world championship with Red Bull, and he certainly aims to do so, to prove to no one but himself. Speaking with Fox Sports and as quoted by, Balls.ie, Sergio said, “I feel that I have the opportunity to be World Champion with Red Bull. I could not be in F1 just to be there, knowing that I am the second driver – it would be a lack of respect towards my career.”

He added, “I’m in F1 because I know I can win and be champion. I don’t have to prove anything, I have to prove it to myself. I don’t want to win races, my focus is to win the championship.”

Will Sergio Perez aid the team and Max Verstappen whenever required?

Last year, the Mexican aided his Dutch teammate multiple times. His most remarkable contributions of his were during the 2021 French GP, the Turkish GP, and the finale, the Abu Dhabi GP, where he troubled the championship contender Lewis Hamilton.

Seeing his contributions last year, the expectation from the Mexican has been there to aide Max at all times. But Sergio won’t give up easily for his teammate if he is in the fight for the championship (as he has no obligation), his ultimate goal.

He clarified by saying, “If Red Bull asked me to give up when I had a chance to fight for the championship, we would be in trouble. If not and only he can fight, I will do it – or vice versa. Nobody has told me that I’m second best. I want to beat Max and so do my engineers. The same on the other side, but the atmosphere is really incredible.”

Sergio Perez has made it clear to everyone that he is in Red Bull to win the championship and is second to none. With him just five points behind Max Verstappen, we can only hope to see a great fight between the two, as Sergio won’t be giving it up easy.
