“I think in the right car, yes” : Charles Leclerc isn’t ruling out the possibility of an eighth world title for Lewis Hamilton
Charles Leclerc
Lewis Hamilton’s chances of capturing a record-breaking eighth Drivers’ World Championship are not ruled out by Charles Leclerc. Michael Schumacher and Hamilton are still locked with seven individual championships each, and Hamilton came so close to earning an eighth last season before being thwarted in the most excruciating of situations.
However, the Mercedes W13 car’s lack of development in the opening half of this season contrasted to Red Bull and Ferrari has demolished any notions that the festivities would only be put on hold for one year. The Briton is now just sixth in the Drivers’ standings, 99 points behind Max Verstappen, who is expected to win the championship again.

Leclerc, who has won three grand prix this season and trailing the Dutchman by 38 points at the midway mark, is the only driver who appears to have any genuine chance of stealing the championship from him. Time appears to be running out for Hamilton, who has one year left on his Mercedes agreement and is now 37 years old. This is unless he extends his tenure with the team or they develop a better car for 2023 and beyond.

An eighth world title for Lewis Hamilton?
The British driver’s chances of winning a historic eighth title, in Charles Leclerc’s opinion, are not certainly dwindling. On being asked if Hamilton can meet the new standard: “I think in the right car, yes, because he is a great. But if it’s him or me for the championship, I’d choose myself obviously. Sorry, Lewis,” said Leclerc.
In the same interview, Leclerc also discussed the loss of three people close to him – his godfather Jules Bianchi, nine months after a crash in the 2014 Japanese Grand Prix; his father, Herve, after a period of ill health in 2017; and friend Anthoine Hubert in a Formula 2 accident on the 2019 Belgian Grand Prix weekend.
“I don’t think about danger. I was extremely close to Jules, and Anthoine I had known since we were young. It’s very, very difficult to see people you have known but aren’t here anymore because of the sport you love most. But I don’t think about stopping. I’ve been programmed to do this since I was young. There is nothing else I can do. I’m just good at driving,” concluded Leclerc.
