Marcus Ericsson, former Formula 1 driver, seems to reckon Fernando Alonso’s surprise move to Aston Martin. Marcus Ericsson used to drive for Alfa Romeo, he had the opportunity to drive on the same grid as Alonso and has a better understanding of what is going behind Fernando’s mind. After almost signing for Alpine, he played a shocker to Aston with no one else from Alpine to have any information about it.

Fernando Alonso has been a part of Alpine since he started his career. He won two championships with his Renault back in 2005-2006 as the team expected the 41-year-old driver to have a seat in 2023. As a surprise to the F1 community, Sebastian Vettel decided to retire from the sport at the end of 2022. With Aston left with a seat to fill they took a chance with a two-time world champion and he took it. Replacing a four-time champion with a two-time one leaves Aston Martin with a young driver besides an experience one.

Marcus understands this move from Alonso as a dominator of the team with everything under his control. ”When I saw the news I was of course surprised, but the more I think about it the more I understand why it happened,” said Marcus.

Marcus understands the shock Alpine received after almost confirming Alonso again. But as for Fernando, he has always been someone who likes to control everything for his benefit. Marcus puts everything in this reference to make things work for Alonso.

“He wanted to be in control and make his own path. With the opportunity at Aston Martin that came up for him, I understand why he took that chance. The long deal as opposed to the one-year deal he was rumoured to get at Alpine, but the news was a shock”, said Marcus.

Alpine troubles didn’t end with Alonso not working with them. Oscar Piastri a rightful heir to Alonso’s seat also decided not to drive with Alpine next season.
