“I want to win in the right way,” Toto Wolff opines on his vision for Mercedes

Toto Wolff the Mercedes team Principal has recently indicated that he wants his team to move away from the ‘win at all costs’ approach that they were following during the turbo hybrid era as it is important for him to do things in the right way.

Mercedes was the most dominant team in the sport since 2014 when they were able to win 7 consecutive Championship doubles, however, their brilliant run was brought to an abrupt stop last year when Max Verstappen managed to snatch the title away from Hamiton on the last lap of the season in Abu Dhabi.

Saudi Arabia was the last race that the team was able to win in 2021 and since then the Silver Arrows haven’t managed to get a Grand Prix win in the pinnacle of motorsports.

Moreover, under the new regulations for 2022, the Brackley-based team has struggled immensely with porpoising and that curtailed their progress in the early phase of the season.

Mercedes has been targeted this season on the suspicion of using flexi-floors on its W13 but Wolff has so far denied the allegations and has indicated that his team wants to win the right way.

I don’t know if it gives us an edge over the other constructors because we are all different in our approach.”

The sport is, after all, an entertainment product, and the ‘win at all costs mentality is something I would have endorsed a couple of years ago.”

That’s very much the American way of just crushing the opposition whatever it takes.”

Today, I still want to win but I want to win in the right way.”

I have values and a mindset I want to stand for in the team. I believe in humility, honesty, integrity, and transparency. These are ingredients that are important in the long term.”

Moreover, Toto Wolff wants to build a good environment within the team so that when he would look back at his tenure 10-20 years down the line, he can say that he did things the right way.

You may have someone that wins but doesn’t win in the right way, but that will not last,” he continued. “And… karma exists.

I’m not looking at one race or one season, I’m looking at 10 or 20 years. My perspective is long-term because I’m a co-owner of the team.”

My time will not end with my employment contract, so that allows me to look beyond my ‘shelf life’ of the next decade.”

I want to be able to look back and say ‘we did it the right way and we were successful’.”

Mercedes is currently going through a tough time in F1 considering, they were the powerhouses in the sport till last year, however, all bad things come to an end at one point or the other and Wolff is highly optimistic that he can get the team to where they were by doing things in the right way and not straying away from the morals and values he wants to implement within the whole team.

The Silver Arrows have qualified in the top 4 with Lewis Hamilton ahead of today’s French Grand Prix and their team Principal’s words of wisdom are certainly going to give them a much-needed boost for the rest of the second leg of the 2022 F1 season.
