FIA race director Niels Wittich declared stricter controls on the jewellery drivers could wear in the pilot’s seat while on race course at the Australian Grand Prix in April, referencing unsafe conditions. Lewis Hamilton, known for his glam, believed he was being singled out by the criterion, and a standoff ensued between the 7-time former World Champion and the FIA over the race weekend from which his piercings would have to be removed.

In the end, the judgement went into effect at the British Grand Prix in July, when Hamilton was compelled to take off his nose stud to prevent a possible race ban. Hamilton was obviously trying to decorate himself with as many pieces of jewellery as feasible at the press conference for the Miami Grand Prix in May. He has now conceded that this was the situation – and that his remark about having a piercing that he couldn’t “really explain where it is” was a laughing matter.

“I just put on as much as I could. I was just f*cking with it. I don’t have any other piercings anywhere. But I love that there’s this thinking ‘sh*t, has he got his balls pierced? Since I was a kid…rules, I’ve never loved being told what to do. People love to have power and to enforce power,” said Hamilton in an interview in reference to the issue.

Hamilton’s tattoos are another distinctive feature of his presence, and he described the significance of the tattoos on his chest that says ‘Powerful Beyond Measure.’ He explained that it was inspired by a quote by author Marianne Williamson, which reads: “Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our light, not our darkness, that most frightens us.”

Hamilton concluded: “We limit ourselves the majority of the time. And where it really hit me hard is we should never have to dim our light in order to make others feel….If anything, we should shine as bright as we can to liberate others to do the same. I live my life by that quote. For so long in my life, I felt like I was dimming my light because I felt uncomfortable.”
