“I was super surprised to see everyone on the soft,” Kevin Magnussen bemoans over wrong tyre choice for the Imola sprint race

Kevin Magnussen
It went wrong for Kevin Magnussen after an ultra impressive qualifying showing which helped finish P4. Haas would ideally wanted him to hold on to that position if not make up places. But that wasn’t destined to be as the Danish driver lacked the pace that he showed during qualifying. Haas and Kevin Magnussen decided to go for the medium compound of tyres while the rest of the chasing pack was on the softs.
Kevin Magnussen started impressively in the sprint but wasn’t able to deal with the likes of Daniel Ricciardo and Carlos Sainz who breezed past him with the help of DRS. But still the Danish driver was able to finish P8. It wasn’t a bad day at the office for the much improved Haas but they need to capitalize on every opportunity they get to become the best of the rest keeping in mind that McLaren is on the charge.
Haas has definitely looked class apart after what we have seen from them in the first few races. But keeping in mind that the circuit around Imola doesn’t have a lot of overtaking zones, grid position would mean everything. Therefore, it can be said that it was a missed opportunity for Haas after what they had achieved in qualifying. But, still everything isn’t lost.
Kevin Magnussen was let down by the choice of compound of tyres in the sprint race at the Imola GP

Kevin Magnussen did rue the decision of the medium compound of tyres over the softs. He said, “Yeah, I was super surprised to see everyone on the soft.”
“We tried the soft in free practice and thought it would degrade too much, so when everyone else was on soft at the start, I was a little nervous.”
“But overall, the soft tyre was the right tyre for that race and we learned that.”
“Nonetheless, we’ve had a good weekend, and looking forward to tomorrow and hopefully score some more points,” as reported by motorsport.
Kevin Magnussen was left defenseless in the sprint as his medium compound tyres lacked as compared to the soft. This meant he was pushed from P4 to P8, which will makes his job tougher during the race.
