‘I’m happy with my choice’: Sebastian Vettel opens up on Red Bull talks in 2020

Sebastian Vettel

Sebastian Vettel has had a storied career that will end in Abu Dhabi this season. There have been ups and downs and many memorable moments, and fans will remember all these things. But it has not been nice watching Vettel, a 4-time world champion, driving a lower midfield car.

This year it was considerably worse: Aston Martin are currently 9th with 25 points, of which 20 have come from the German driver. It’s rather understandable that Vettel chose to retire in his particular situation, with him no longer feeling the love for the sport as much as he used to, and him wanting to spend more time with his family.

Though, it may have been different. Vettel was apparently also in ‘talks’ with Red Bull back in 2020 but eventually chose to go to Aston Martin instead, replacing Sergio Perez, who in fact turned out to be the man going to Red Bull. The Red Bull has been the best or the second-best car in both years since that, and it may have been Vettel driving it alongside Max Verstappen.

Vettel: Red Bull talks weren’t ‘concrete’

Red Bull was, of course, the team where Vettel won all four of his championships in a row, and had a record-matching season in 2013, taking 13 wins and equalling his hero, Michael Schumacher for most race wins in a season. After a disappointing 2014 season, he left for Ferrari with a dream.

Unfortunately, despite coming close, he could not win a championship. A turning point in his career is considered to be the German Grand Prix in 2018, where he crashed under the safety car in rainy conditions while leading the championship. Perhaps his decision (if it was his) to not return to Red Bull was one such turning point as well.

As per formulapassion.it, Sebastian Vettel said of his decision: “In 2020, I decided to go to Aston Martin. At the time I also had some talks with Red Bull for a return but nothing really concrete. I’m happy with my choice. Of course, I expected greater competitiveness but I am satisfied with the results anyway.”

For Vettel and Red Bull fans, it would certainly have been a dream come true for the German to drive for his ‘boyhood’ team once again. No one can really tell how the move would have turned out, and if Vettel would have performed better than Perez has or not, but it would certainly have been a trip down memory lane, as will be Monza this weekend. His first win was at this track, and it is his last Italian Grand Prix. Everyone will be hoping for a good result for Vettel.
