“I’m not going to go out there trying to be the leader,” George Russell content to play second fiddle to Lewis Hamilton
George Russell and Lewis Hamilton
George Russell, despite Mercedes’ woes, has had a pretty decent start to the season. The Briton has been to bag some valuable points while his team continues to find solutions to porpoising and other engine issues. George has been able to outperform Lewis Hamilton for the best part of three races but that hasn’t allowed any sort of friction to develop between the rookie and the seven time world champion.
To the contrary, George Russell and Lewis Hamilton have been getting along pretty well on and off the track. Lewis Hamilton showered heaps of praises on his team mate after his first podium with Mercedes. He said, ““He’s been so solid over these first three races. He’s working, really grafting away, he’s doing an amazing job,” as reported by gpfans.
George Russell and Lewis Hamilton might not have the ideal start to the season on the track but that hasn’t stopped them from building a strong relationship off the track. The duo seemed to have understood that if the team needs to recover from these early bumps, they have to stand together and help each other out. Both of them are trying to get the best out of what they have.

But, there doesn’t seem to be anything else that they can do keeping in mind the problems Mercedes’ W-13 seems to be facing with porpoising. Despite of the problems, George Russell and Lewis Hamilton were able to secure P3 and P4 respectively at the Australian GP.
But George Russell has also impressed with his attitude and his desire to learn from Lewis Hamilton. Recently, he paid his respects to him in his own way. Speaking to SkySports, he said, “There’s no number one or number two at Mercedes… I’m not going to go out there trying to be the leader when I’m going up against the greatest of all time.”
It’s imperative for Mercedes that both Lewis Hamilton and George Russell stay united if they want to have a fighting chance against the super impressive Ferrari and arch rivals, Red Bull.
