“I hope Christian Horner is more concerned,” Inaki Rueda backs Ferrari to come back stronger after disappointing weekends

“I hope Christian Horner is more concerned,” Inaki Rueda backs Ferrari to come back stronger after disappointing weekends

For Ferrari, the last two weekends ended in disappointment. They looked the better car on both occasions, but Red Bull triumphed in the races. In Spain, Charles Leclerc retired due to a power unit issue while in the lead. And in Monaco, a pit-stop error cost him the victory. Red Bull have won all four of the last races, and five in total.

On both occasions, they came close to victory but failed in the end. With Red Bull a whole 36 points in the lead, Ferrari cannot afford any more slip-up weekends like these for the rest of the season. Reliability seems to be emerging as an issue for Ferrari in recent weeks as it had been for Red Bull in the first three races. Apart from Charles Leclerc, Valtteri Bottas, Zhou Guanyu, and Kevin Magnussen have all encountered issues with their power units. Mattia Binotto admitted that the reliability was among their chief concerns for the rest of the season.

“…Reliability is certainly a big challenge, and reliability, when you’ve got concerns, it’s never obvious to fix them in a short time. So yes, it is a concern. It doesn’t mean that we are too concerned, I hope Christian [Horner] is more [concerned] than myself.”

In Ferrari’s race analysis of Monaco, Rueda first explained the strategic errors they had made, with the primary ones being: Underestimating Sergio Perez’s pace, and another gap mistake in the pit stop, where there was not enough of a time gap between the two Ferraris when they were double-stacking.

Talking about the mood at the team following the weekend, Rueda said:

“We come away from Monaco with a bittersweet taste in our mouth. We did some very good things, and we did other things that we’re not so proud of.”

He concluded with: “We will make sure we come back stronger from this experience.”

Ferrari go into Baku a full three dozen points behind. However, they are reported to be bringing upgrades to their rear wing, which they hope would improve their performance in the straights – given the track’s layout.
