‘Information might have been LEAKED’: Otmar Szafnauer responds to the crazy transfer saga involving Oscar Piastri and Fernando Alonso
Otmar Szafnauer
Otmar Szafnauer was caught in the middle of what has been a mind boggling transfer season. It all started with Sebastian Vettel deciding to call it quits at the end of the season. The four time world champion, ahead of the Hungarian GP, revealed on Instagram that he would like to spend time with his family and therefore he would like to retire at the end of the season.
We all know that there are only 20 seats in F1, which means that all drivers fight tooth and nail to keep their seat. Fernando Alonso, among all the drivers, is the most experienced one and understands this very well. There was a lot of noise about Oscar Piastri potentially driving with Alpine and Fernando Alonso was speculated to pay the price. Therefore, Aston Martin looked like a viable option for the 41 year old.
If you think that this was shocking, you are in for a surprise. We all are well aware of the fact that Alpine have spent a lot on Oscar Piastri to make him F1 ready. When the French manufacturers thought that it was time for them to cash in, Piastri decided to go back on his word. This left Otmar Szafnauer flabbergasted and also leaves him with a ton of work to do.
Otmar Szafnauer says that he would not be surprised to know if information was leaked
Responding to this situation, Otmar has given some eyebrow raising comments. He said, “Look, I have no record of it [information behind shared], but this is Formula 1 and maybe in a couple of years someone says that they have evidence of shared information, I would not be surprised.”
“I always tell everyone that in Formula 1 you have to act as if everyone knows everything. That there are no secrets in these things. When you ask someone not to say anything, they act like everyone knows (laughs).“
“That’s how I’ve run my business in Formula 1 for 25 years. And if this (sharing information between the protagonists) has happened, you should not be surprised.”
It would be a stretch to say that information was leaked but if a person who has been in the business for 25 years claims something like that, it is definitely worth giving it a look. Therefore, if there’s an iota of opportunity of any team doing something illegal, FIA should look into it.
