Mercedes Formula one team has struggled with one issue or the other so far during the 2022 Formula One season and is currently the third quickest team on the grid behind Red Bull and Ferrari.

As per Formula One editor Mark Hughes, the slow start is not something that is very new to them, and believes that the Brackley-based team is going to make huge strides forward in the upcoming races.

The German team at the end of last season parted ways with former driver Valtteri Bottas who spent five successful years with the team. As a replacement, they brought in George Russell who did really well in his spell with the Williams Formula One team.

Both the parties were eager on the move so the deal was made without any kind of complication.

When it was announced that George Russell was going to be Lewis Hamilton’s teammate for the 2022 season, it was expected that Lewis was going to stay ahead of Russell throughout the season, however, to everyone’s surprise, Russell is the one who is currently ahead in the driver’s championship.

Russell is currently sitting in P2 whereas Hamilton is P5 in the driver’s standings. While talking about the quick progress that George Russell has made at Mercedes, Hughes said, ” Overall, Russell’s assimilation into the team has been terrific.”

Hamilton at the moment probably retains the edge in raw pace, but that’s only to be expected. He was, after all, initially not as fast as Nico Rosberg when he joined in 2013 but developed through the season to become faster.”

Mark Hughes has backed Lewis Hamilton to make solid progress in the upcoming races and is confident that the 7-time champ would be able to close down the gap to the front runners and lead the team during the current season.

If Lewis is able to get his mojo back in the coming races, then it is going to bode well for the team in their fight for the Constructors title, and given they are the reigning champs, Mercedes at the very least won’t be looking to miss out on the Constructors title.
