‘It hurts to have 1 podium in 9 race’: Charles Leclerc devastated with how the ‘tables have turned’ after a brilliant start to the season

Charles Leclerc was off to the best possible start to the 2022 season as he defeated the reigning world champion, Max Verstappen, in the opening encounter at Bahrain. It wasn’t just the victory that impressed us but it was the way in which he battled to defeat Max in the duel of the desert. We saw another epic fight at Jeddah where Max Verstappen came up trumps.

The circus on wheels moved along to Australia where the onus was on Charles Leclerc to bounce back from that loss in Saudi Arabia and that’s what he did. The Monegasque driver looked in control from the start of the race and cruised to secure his second win of the season. He made easy work of the task at hand and registered his credentials to compete for the world championship against Max Verstappen.

Things have gone downhill from that point onwards. Max Verstappen and Red Bull have got their house in order after that crushing defeat in Australia and come back to tighten their grip on both the championships. What has made their work easier has been Ferrari’s reliability issues and poor strategy calls over the course of the season. This has allowed Max to become the runaway leader of the championship.

This has been a season of what could have been had things not gone for Charles Leclerc. The Monegasque driver admitted that when he said, “One podium in the last 9 races hurts, especially considering the performance we showed in this time.”

“In each of the 9 races except Spa, the pace was enough to fight for the win, but I only managed to get one podium, so it hurts.”

Charles sounded a dejected figure after Spa. He said, “It starts to look very difficult, especially with the pace [Red Bull] have shown this weekend. But I will get my head down, try to focus race by race and give it my best.”

It’s been a horror show for Charles Leclerc and Ferrari after the kind of promise that they showed at the start of the season. It’s important for them to finish ahead of Mercedes in the constructor’s if they don’t want it to be a disappointing season.
