“It was no surpise,” Former F1 driver Jan Lammers not taken aback with Max Verstappen’s dominant win at Spa

Last Sunday, Red-Bull saw a dominant victory as they secured a 1-2 at the Spa-Francorchamp Circuit. Jan Lammers the former F1 driver and and current sporting director of the Zandvoort circuit, watched in admiration as the Dutchman started from 14th on the grid and secured first place in the race.

Verstappen had started his race on the soft tyres giving him an advantage over most of the grid except pole sitter Carlos Sainz who also started on the same tyres as him. The soft, red tyres provide better grip compared to other tyres but wear out much faster. Despite starting on the same set of tyres Verstappen was able to perform better because of the way he had handled the tyres.

Lammers said “I think they (Red Bull Racinghad the idea for a long time that they could win, although they were talking about the podium. It soon became clear that it was a walk in the park.” He is organising the Dutch Grand Prix for the second year in a row and hopes to see the Dutchman win at his home race once again.

“On that red tyre and with a full tank, Sainz tried very hard to get a gap. You shouldn’t do that on this tyre, because it wears down quickly. A tyre always degrades when you drive longer. Then that cliff drops very quickly. That was something Max seemed to be aware of at the start,” says Lammers.

The Zandvoort resident was in praises as he watched the race, he was awed by the calmness Verstappen showed on track. The Dutchman gained six places on the first lap of the race and it was clear that the Dutchman had started racing with a long term vision in his mind. When asked about how big the gap between Red-Bull and Ferrari was during the race, Carlos Sainz stated, “I don’t know how much per lap but it was a lot per lap.”

Carlos Sainz predicts a possible Ferrari comeback at the Dutch Grand Prix this weekend, he said “Today it was Mercedes, but I think at Zandvoort we can be back on form and beat Red Bull again,”

The Spaniard is hopeful of his chances against Red-Bull in the coming weekend, despite the domination shown by Red-Bull and Max Verstappen at Spa. He feels that Zandvoort is a circuit on which he will be able to race Red-Bull on equal terms and possibly beat them.

He calls Spa as a ‘one-off’ for Ferrari and predicts a stronger comeback in the next race. The Dutch Grand Prix is the home race for Max Verstappen, with tens of thousands of orange-coloured Dutch in the stands cheering for the Dutchman.

Undoubtedly he is looking towards his home race and aiming towards an equally dominant victory as the one in Spa.
