“It will not come every single race,” Ferrari holding up on upgrades until Silverstone

“It will not come every single race,” Ferrari holding up on upgrades until Silverstone

Mattia Binotto

Scuderia Ferrari, after losing positions in Miami, realized that they would have to bring in upgrades to the car if they wanted to compete against the highly developed RB18s of Red Bull. Ferrari introduced new upgrades in the Spanish Grand Prix, which saw Charles Leclerc taking pole from Max Verstappen, and even creating a 30 second lead very early in the race. Ferrari were looking good in shape until Carlos Sainz had a spin and Charles Leclerc had issues with his power unit which saw him retiring in the race early.

Mattia Binotto, team principal of the Scuderia stated that the budget issues had made them introduce the upgrades somewhat late into the season. He also said that Red Bull would “soon have to stop” upgrading their car because of the budget cap.

Ferrari have said that they would introduce their next upgrade package at Silverstone, in the British Grand Prix. That would be round 10 of this year’s championship. Ferrari have 3 important races before that, where they would have to be dominant to take back the lead in the championship.

While it is essential for Ferrari to upgrade their car in order to be dominant over Red Bull, who edged out Ferrari in the constructors’, they also know the issues with the budget cap, and upgrading the car way too much too early could lead to a lot of problems later in the season. There have been many teams debating upon the idea of increasing the budget cap for upgrades this season.

“We’ll bring upgrades when we have got a significant one,” says Binotto

Mattia Binotto said that bringing in a new upgrade every race is not an ideal option as it affects the budget cap a lot.

“I think you can look at the next races. We’ve got now Monaco where maybe you’re bringing a new front suspension for steering angle, and then later on, we’ve got Baku which is a city circuit,” said Binotto, quoted by Motorsport.

“So I think it will be around the UK where maybe some developments will arrive.”

Ferrari should be pretty much okay in the upcoming races in Monaco and Azerbaijan with the current upgrades, they might have to just fight for it.

Max Verstappen and Red Bull took the lead from Ferrari in both constructors’ and drivers’ championship after a 1 – 2 finish in the Spanish Grand Prix.
