‘It won’t cover the freight and energy cost’: Toto Wolff unhappy with the numbers despite an increase in the budget cap
Toto Wolff
Toto Wolff is not at all happy with the increase in the budget cap for the season. Mercedes’ Team Principal was one of the bosses who was a part of the meeting which was called in by the FIA to discuss this matter. The budget cap was becoming a bigger issue by the day with teams unsure of the fact as to whether they will will able to complete the season with the current budget.
FIA had allowed the teams to spend a total of $140 dollars over the course of the season, with an extra $1.2 million available for the last race of the season. But, with the increase in inflation and freight cost, it was becoming a task for the teams to to stay within the budget cap. Therefore it was imperative for the FIA to cater to the requests and revise the budget cap, if need be.
Team like Haas had a even bigger headache as it has had to spend a part of their budget on crashes too after going over the amount given for repairs. The team has not been able to bring in a major update this season, which puts them on the backfoot when compared to the other teams. So, after much deliberation, it was confirmed that FIA has approved to increase the budget cap by 3.1%.

Toto Wolff discontent with the amount that has been added to the budget cap
But, it is not something that has made everyone happy, especially Toto Wolff and Christian Horner, who were expecting more. Toto said, “The regulations, what they say is that if inflation is above three per cent, then you will adjust accordingly.”
“It is a bit complicated to explain but we have got three per cent on top which should cover a little bit of the inflation but not the freight and energy costs.”
Christian Horner also gave his view: “It’s not enough for us, and it’s too much for the little ones. So it’s a compromise, and a consensus was found in the end.”
It’s definitely a sigh of relief for most teams but will it prove to be enough at the end of the season? Time will only tell. The teams might want to hold back their horses for the time being with this budget cap.
