“It’s a tweak rather than an overhaul,” Lawrence Barretto comments upon update in Max Verstappen’s driving style

Max Verstappen

Max Verstappen has been notoriously famous for his aggressive driving style. In 2021, many believe that it was his driving style that won him the championship but also caused plenty of accidents with his rival in the Mercedes car, Lewis Hamilton.

However, his driving style has shifted a bit from pure aggression to mature aggression. Max Verstappen has been complimented upon this change by several people as he has had plenty of clean bouts with Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc. Lawrence Barretto from F1.com believes that it’s the championship title that has brought this change in the Red Bull driver.

In his column for F1.com, Lawrence writes, “The experience that he’s built up during that period has helped him mature as a driver. He’s still the risk-taking, attacking, hardcore fighter on track – but we’ve seen this that he’s harnessed that slightly with decision making that is more calculated. It’s a tweak rather than an overhaul.”

How has Max Verstappen grown as a driver?

Max Verstappen

The reigning champion has been in F1 for much longer than most people realize. Although he is just 24 at the moment, Max has been racing for 7 years in the top competition, making his debut for the then Red Bull’s junior team Toro Rosso.

Over the past years, he had been trying to push for the championship and succeeded last year. His aggressive style received mixed reactions from the fans and experts. Regardless of anyone’s opinion of his style, it yielded the desired result for the driver and the team.

Now, making an improvement on his way, he driver more maturely. He appears to be racing cleaner and quicker, knows when to back out from a move, and knows how to time a move. We’ve seen it all this year, something that could be said to have been missing from his earlier years.
