Lewis Hamilton will leave Mercedes at the end of 2024 after spending over a decade at Brackley. the seven-time world champion signed a massive $430 million deal with Scuderia Ferrari to join the squad in 2025. However, this has put the Silver Arrows in a difficult spot over data sharing with its star driver. Former F1 driver Ivan Capelli has now proposed a solution.
Hamilton was found taking pictures of the Mercedes W15 in the garage during pre-season testing. There have been fears that the Briton might reveal crucial information about the Silver Arrows to Ferrari next year. Capelli reckoned that the Brackley-based team should ban Lewis Hamilton from taking his phone to the garage mid-way through 2024.
If I were Mercedes, I would ban him [Lewis Hamilton] from taking the phone into the garage from mid-season to be on the safe side.Ivan Capelli told Gazzetta dello Sport
The Italian highlighted that Mercedes would provide less and less information to Hamilton as the end of the season approaches. The Silver Arrows would ensure that the 39-year-old takes away little information that could hurt the team’s prospects for the future. Although, Ivan Capelli mentioned that the seven-time world champion would give his best during his final campaign at Brackley.
The closer they get to the end of the working relationship, the less Mercedes will give information to Hamilton. Still, Hamilton himself will certainly give everything all season.
Can Lewis Hamilton bounce back during his final season with Mercedes?
Lewis Hamilton achieved historic success with the Silver Arrows ever since he joined the team in 2013. However, the seven-time world champion has struggled in the past two seasons. Hamilton last won a race over two years ago at the 2021 Saudi Arabian GP.
The Briton has had a tense relationship with Mercedes engineers recently. Lewis Hamilton even claimed that the team admitted that he was right about a car development path that was ignored by the Silver Arrows. Nevertheless, the 39-year-old would be looking to have a decent final season to end the long and successful partnership.
Hamilton would find it difficult to have a shot at the title considering Max Verstappen’s pre-season runs. However, the seven-time world champion will likely fight for a couple of race wins this year behind the wheel of the W15. Fans would be looking forward to seeing how things pan out for Lewis Hamilton and Mercedes this season.
