“I’ve always tried to be myself,” Max Verstappen admits to not being addicted to any idol
Max Verstappen
Max Verstappen has been one of the most dominating drivers in the past and current season, he has inspired many other drivers to be like him, and drive like him. It is not uncommon in F1 to see drivers idolizing drivers from the past, as they call it. Most of the time it is other drivers that the current drivers watched in their childhood which motivated them to be one of the stars in the sport. Sebastian Vettel and Michael Schumacher are one of the best examples of the same.

What Verstappen recently stated about having an idol after Helmut Marko compared him to the great Ayrton Senna has shocked many fans. According to the Dutchman, he does not have any idols that he would worship. In his opinion, it only makes the drivers slow. He respects many athletes and drivers, but he does not necessarily have any idol; even when his own father was one of the F1 drivers in the earlier days.
He does not mean any disrespect for the legendary racing drivers, he just does not idolize any of them, per se.
Max Verstappen believes keeping idols only makes you slower.
GPBlog quoted Verstappen; “You can only lose, because you can only be as good as you can be, but never better. That’s why I’ve always tried to be myself.” It simply means that keeping an idol locks you in a space to be like them, which could stop you from creating history, if you can, because there would come a time when you would have achieved all that your idol did, and post that you would lose the motivation to achieve more.
Verstappen was also asked if he was trying to beat Legend Michael Schumacher or Lewis Hamilton with more than 7 World Championships, to which he said that he would score as many as he can, but doesn’t know how much they would be. He currently leads the World Championship with 208 points.
