“I’ve been reasonably pleased,” George Russell settles with the results considering Mercedes’ pace

George Russell

George Russell was given the contract of a lifetime back in 2021 for this season when he was given a seat in Mercedes by Toto Wolff and Valterri Bottas was moved to Alfa Romeo. Mercedes had been one of the most dominating teams in the sport by then, but as this season started, it didn’t look like as much in the hands of Mercedes as it had been. During pre-season testing, statements from Lewis Hamilton did provide some details about the pace of the car, as he said that it “didn’t look competitive enough.”

The statements turned out to be true as Mercedes seem to be struggling with the new aerodynamics and ground effect which are making the cars bounce on straights, losing a lot of pace.

George Russell has still managed to score and drive better than Hamilton, finishing top 5 in all of the races that have been held until now, but hasn’t gone any farther than P3; giving him 2 podiums in the season until now. This is surely a better result for George, who had been in a Williams for a very long time until last year, and that is also the reason he’s performing better in Mercedes, as is being speculated.

And although fans expected more from the silver arrows, Russell thinks that the results have been the best so far given the pace of the car, and they (the team) could not have done any better than how they have until now.

“I think results have been maximised,” Russell makes a contradicting statement.

Everyone, including the Mercedes crew expected better results in all of the races that have taken place until now, and although there have been no reliability issues in any of the Mercedes cars, they still haven’t caught up with the pace of Red Bull or Ferrari in most of the races.

Russell, however, has a contradicting statement than the team. According to him the results of the car, given the pace, have been maximized, and that no opportunity was left for any better performance.

“I think given the pace of the car and given where we’ve been as a team, I’ve been reasonably pleased with how I’ve performed,” GPBlog quoted the young Brit. “I think the results have been maximised. I don’t see many races where we could have achieved better results.”

At the same time, the new Merc driver hopes for improvement in the performance of the car, and is eager to top with the cars on top tier as of now; Max Verstappen and Charles Leclerc still remain potential targets for the Brit to challenge in the upcoming races.
