Red Bull’s Max Verstappen retired during the 40th lap of the Australian GP. The 2021 World Champion was asked to stop on track while he was P2 behind Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc who won the race starting from Pole position. Red Bull’s Sergio Perez finished second. Meanwhile, George Russell claimed his first podium finish as a Mercedes driver as the Briton finished 3rd in the race.
The 2021 World Champion pulled over and parked his car down at the Turn 2 during the 40th lap of the race. “Stop the car,” he was told by his race engineer on the radio as smoke emerged from the back of his car. “I smell some weird fluid,” the Dutchman was heard saying just as he pulled over, and he has parked up near an escape road.
Headling into Imola where Verstappen won the race last season, the Dutchman believes he is not obsessed with numbers. According to him, his 2021 title defence chances are depended mostly on the car and how it performs on the track.

Max Verstappen stands 6th in the Drivers standings with 25 points, all secured in the 2022 Saudi Arabian GP. The reigning world champion says had is still realistic about his title defence aspirations. With Red Bull’s reliability in question, this could mean Verstappen has an uphill battle in hand.
Verstappen said, “I’ve never paid attention to records or numbers. Winning races and titles don’t just depend on yourself or your commitment, but on the car you have. So my goal is to do my best every Sunday.”
Red Bull will look to improve their standings in the Constructors championship. Ferrari leads the championship with more than 50 points separating them from Red Bull. While 2021 rivals Mercedes are 2nd on the standings.
