Mercedes has kicked off its Canadian GP weekend on a strong note, with both its drivers finishing yesterday’s FP2 session in P1 and P2. Keeping this in view, Mercedes engineer James Allison has claimed that on the back of continuous improvement, the team can challenge Red Bull for wins this year.
James Allison has taken things even further by indicating that if the Brackley-based team does everything right during the ongoing campaign and the coming seasons, there would be every chance of seeing the team in a World Championship battle in the upcoming seasons of the pinnacle of motor racing.
While talking about the same after FP2, Allison said, “Can this car become competitive enough to win a race this year? Yes, it can. Can we — if we do the right things — be in the championship fight for the following year? Even even more yes.” With his comments, Allison has fired an indirect warning toward Red Bull and indicated that Mercedes F1 is coming to hunt them down.
The Spanish GP was a major step in the right direction for the team, where Lewis Hamilton and George Russell managed a P2 and P3 finish. Moreover, ahead of the upcoming Canadian GP, much positive news was coming out of the Mercedes camp. With their FP2 performance, the team is oozing a lot of positivity.
Can Mercedes F1 secure its first win of 2023 in Canada?
While Mercedes is looking in a pretty good place after yesterday’s sessions, going up against the raw pace of Red Bull’s RB19 will not be easy. Moreover, the first hurdle for Lewis Hamilton and Russell will be to have a solid outing during the qualifying session, which is just a few hours away.
If the team can do well in that and find itself toward the extreme north end of the grid for tomorrow, the race could turn out to be wide open between the top 3-4 teams. Just like Mercedes, Aston Martin, and Ferrari were able to show their pace on Friday, the Canadian GP could be an entertaining affair.
Mercedes is currently second in the Constructors Championship but is not too far ahead of Ferrari and Aston Martin. From this point of view, the race at the Gilles-Villeneuve F1 circuit holds a lot of significance and it is going to be fascinating to see how the Toto Wolff-led would perform on Sunday.
