The Mercedes Formula 1 team is going through a pretty up-and-down 2023 season. While the ongoing campaign is in its summer break, the Brackley-based team’s Technical Director, James Allison, has given a major update as to where things are regarding the development of next year’s W15.
Mercedes came into the ongoing campaign with the hope of challenging for the World Championship, but after just 12 rounds, their push has run out of steam. The W14 has proved to be an unpredictable car in several aspects and this has massively hindered Lewis Hamilton and co’s 2023 push.
The British engineer feels that while it is important to keep improving this year, he has admitted that Mercedes is going to major focus on 2024’s car after the end of the ongoing summer break. Mercedesamgf1.com quotes Allison, “At this stage of the year the wind tunnel is heavily focused on 2024.”
“Large chunks of the drawing office, vehicle dynamics, and manufacturing for long-lead-time production items are starting to gather their skirts. From the summer break onwards, next year’s car is where the largest call is answered.” James Allison has made Mercedes’s plans crystal clear for the rest of the 2023 campaign.
Mercedes has to perform during the 2024 F1 season
While the 2023 F1 World Championship is pretty much out of the reach of the Mercedes F1 team, they have no choice but to come up with a potent machine for next year. Mercedes was dominating the sport during the turbo hybrid era, and the fans are going to get restless if they don’t deliver on the track during the 2024 campaign.
The Toto Wolff-led team has a very strong driver line-up in the form of up-and-coming star George Russell and the former 7-time F1 World Champion Lewis Hamilton. If they are provided with the right tools next year, then Mercedes would be in good shape and potentially able to make a solid claim for the Championship.
The 2024 season is still quite far away, and considering this, the ongoing campaign will be about damage limitation for the team. Mercedes is currently second in the Constructors Championship but has got the lights of Aston Martin, Ferrari, and even the McLaren F1 team hot on its heels.
