Logan Sargeant made his F1 debut in 2023 after being promoted by Williams to its F1 team. The 22-year-old had shown promise in his F2 campaign last season and defeated Mick Schumacher for the seat at the Grove-based team. However, Williams Team Principal James Vowles has clarified that Sargeant needs to earn a contract renewal for next season.

Vowles claimed that the American driver has shown his talent during his rookie year and is on the right path. However, the Williams boss mentioned that Logan Sargeant needs to improve his performance as the season progresses. The 22-year-old is still far off teammate Alex Albon. James Vowles said, as reported by Racingnews365, “Where Logan is, he’s on the right path to development. He’s just got to step it up, race on race.

The 44-year-old laid down the conditions that would secure Logan Sargeant’s extension with Williams. James Vowles mentioned that the 22-year-old will only be here if he delivers the expected results. The Briton labeled Williams as a ‘meritocracy,’ claiming that talent would be retained at Grove on merit. Vowles explained, “The comments I’ve given him are this: ‘It’s a meritocracy – you are not here because we want you to be here; you have to earn your place’.”

Previously, rumors had surfaced that Mercedes’ Toto Wolff is trying to get his former colleague James Vowles to sign Mick Schumacher. Schumacher is currently a reserve driver for the Silver Arrows. The German squad is keen on having Williams replace Logan Sargeant with its driver. However, such a scenario will likely be avoided if Sargeant can improve throughout the season.

The American driver has failed to score any points so far this season. On the other hand, Alex Albon has put 21 points on the board for the British team. As such, Sargeant would need to improve his performance and score some points in the next few rounds if the 22-year-old wants to sign a new contract with the Grove-based team.

Thus, James Vowles has insisted that Logan Sargeant is the Williams’ primary choice for 2024. The 44-year-old reckoned that the American driver was on the right path of development. However, there is still progress to be made before the 22-year-old earns his place for another year. Fans would be looking forward to seeing how Sargeant performs in the upcoming rounds of the season.
