“Just biting down on my teeth through pain,” Lewis Hamilton suffered severe back pain after the Baku Grand Prix

Lewis Hamilton managed a P4 finish in Baku Grand Prix, securing one of his finishes of the season, but it wasn’t as easy as driving a car. Lewis went through a lot of severe back and spinal pain due to porpoising on the straights of Baku. Toto Wolff before the race also mentioned a potential DNF threat to the 2018 Baku winner.

Mercedes this season are struggling a lot due to a ground effect known as “porpoising” which makes the car bounce on the straights. The bouncing prevents the keep the high speed until the corner arrives and forces them to break long before the turn, allowing the car to settle. Spain seemed like a turnback for the silver arrow with a pace allowing them to fight the likes of RB18 but that was turned down in Monaco and much worse in Baku. The 7-time world champion got affected by the bouncing giving him critical damages on the back after the free practice. It was severe enough to let the driver jump out of the car between the race for a DNF, and this is what Mercedes feared.

However, the 103 times race winner was not in the mood to give up and went to the race with all guns blazing, and completed it with high adrenaline. “Just biting down on my teeth through pain. It was just adrenalin. At the end you’re praying for it to end” said Hamilton.

Lewis Hamilton suffering from back pain managed a P4 finish, which in eyes of the driver is still a race-winning achievement but the points are still allotted to the one finishing above. In this case, it was his teammate, George Russell, for the seventh time in a row. George managed to finish on the podium the third time in the season and is on a streak of top 5 finishes making it his 8th time in a row.

Lewis has been on the toughest season he has ever had in his career, he is P6 in the championship two places behind his teammate on P4. With only 1 podium to his name, he has also been outside points a few times this season. It was a great result for the Mercedes as a team with Geroge and Hamilton finishing P3 and P4.
