The South African Grand Prix is edging nearer to a comeback to Formula One, with reports of their optimism of an agreement with Liberty Media. The Belgian Grand Prix has not signed an agreement for future years and is approaching expiry in 2023. Spa-Francorchamps is one of the most iconic circuits on the calendar and is in danger of being excluded in the upcoming season
The 2024 calendar preparation is already underway, and could potentially contain some unprecedented changes. These include the possible exclusion of Spa, and the return of Kyalami, as well as the premier in Jeddah. There are also discussions to advance Suzuka to early as March, grouped together with China and Australia.
The African circuit’s comeback has been a prioritized intention of new CEO Stefano Domenicali, and it approaches finalization. The date has not yet been set at the moment. A spokesperson for Kyalami stated, “Kyalami is not the promoter of the event, but the circuit that would enter the calendar with a promoter who wants to host a GP. They will negotiate with different individuals, including government, to have a good role model.” He insisted that negotiations are going well and is optimistic of a return in 2024.

Drivers enthusiastic about South Africa GP return

Lewis Hamilton, who has been a strong advocate for the return of Kyalami to the calendar, emphasized the need for its return. His hopes were dealt a big blow in 2022 when negotiations failed due to a lack of governmental support. But with talks back on and an agreement approaching, the Briton will undoubtedly be overjoyed and will anticipate an announcement eagerly.
Hamilton stated, “I’ve been pushing a lot in the background to get the Grand Prix there. I’m happy with the talks that have been [happening], and Stefano [Domenicali] has been doing an amazing job trying to get it to happen. We need to have a Grand Prix there.”
The South African GP was last won by none other than legend Alain Prost in the Williams. The 1.111km long circuit claims a strong heritage throughout the history of Formula One, with Jim Clark winning the most times(4) and Lotus being the most successful constructor (6).
The addition of Kyalami to the calendar would no doubt be positive. Still, the deficit of the iconic Spa-Francorchamps circuit would undoubtedly be a travesty, with the race being one of the most awaited on the race calendar every year. It stands to be seen how this saga will unfold.
