Lando Norris, after the Canadian GP made it known that he is baffled by the 5-second penalty imposed on him during the race. Norris missed out on points for a second race in a row as he was kicked out of the top 10 despite finishing P9 due to the time penalty.
Lando Norris ardently feels that getting smacked with a time penalty for unsportsmanlike behavior during the safety is just not right, as, in his opinion, he did not do anything wrong. Moreover, he has indicated that he is extremely surprised by the actions of the FIA stewards as it ‘doesn’t make any sense to him.’
“The team didn’t tell me, so I have no idea what I got a penalty for. I only got told to box like three seconds before the box. By that time I was flat out, so it didn’t make sense to me. There are plenty of times where you go slow under VSC. So, if I get a penalty today, I should get a penalty for the last three years as well, and so should everyone else. But no, I don’t think I did anything wrong,” Lando Norris said.
While the young Brit feels he was hard done by at the Canadian GP, the FIA Stewards have given a detailed explanation for their decision, and it goes as follows, “The driver slowed under the Safety Car to avoid a delay during a ‘double stack’ for his pitstop. During the Safety Car period, the driver slowed to allow a gap to form between his team-mate in Car 81 and him. In doing so, he delayed the cars behind.”
Lando Norris feels the Candian GP was his best race of the 2023 season

Lando Norris performed exceptionally well during the Grand Prix at the Gilles-Villeneuve F1 circuit and, on the last lap, came extremely close to kicking P8 away from Alpine’s Esteban Ocon. However, it wasn’t to be, but even if he had done that, he would not have scored any points because of his penalty.
While Norris has sounded a bit dejected, he did take the time to admit that the Canadian GP was his best outing of the ongoing season in terms of performance. He added, “It was my best race of the year I would say. One of my first overtakes of the year today, it was a good race.“
“I lost a position [to Piastri] but I made it back. All my overtakes were in the hairpin, I was really confident on the brake. The pace was good, I wouldn’t say it was amazing, but good enough to hold on to the Alfa and the Alpine and have a chance to at least race them.” The McLaren starlet has admitted that he is pleased with how the MCL60 performed at the Canadian GP.
With the Canadian GP out of the way, the F1 extravaganza will move on to its next stop, which is Austria. McLaren is sixth in the Constructors Championship and behind Alpine by some margin. The British team has to work extra hard to remain in the Constructors Championship top 5 at the end of the season.
