The Spanish GP weekend has commenced and we have already witnessed the first on track action in the Free Practice 1 session. This session provided the drivers with knowledge about how the new 18 inch tyres behave on a hot day out in Barcelona. All the 20 challengers on the grid collected valuable information and data for their teams to build forward for the weekend.

This is the second time that Formula 1 visits Barcelona this year. The inaugural pre-season test was hosted at this circuit and now we come back here for the sixth round of the 2022 season. At the pre-season test, one team that turned each head in the paddock was the Mclaren. Their driver, Lando Norris topped the time sheets at the end of the pre-season test and showed signs of great promise for the season head for the papaya team.

Lando Norris optimistic for a McLaren comeback

The strong pre-season testing form was lost as early as the first Grand Prix at Bahrain. The two Mclaren cars finished outside the points and really struggled to keep up with the pace of their rivals. Nevertheless, Lando Norris and Mclaren have managed to turn it around with a podium finish at Imola. The real pace of the Mclaren is still an unknown and the team is hopeful for the upgrades to assist them in the championship.

At the media press conference prior to the Spanish GP, Lando Norris shared his views about the rivals, Mercedes and Ferrari. He said “It’s surprising to see the difficulties at Mercedes. It shows us that being on top is not as easy as it seems. In my view, racing against Hamilton and [George] Russell is nice for a change.”

The young Brit concluded by saying “The fact that Ferrari is now back at the top is an example of the fact that we too can return to the top.” Currently, McLaren stands P4 in the constructors world championship with the a deficit of 49 points to Mercedes in P3. After scoring no points at the Miami GP, the team based out of Woking has brought multiple new parts for the MCL36 and it hopes to find its feet back in Spain.
