Lando Norris, the McLaren Formula 1 driver, was given a penalty at the Canadian GP for appearing to purposely slow down during the safety car incident. Norris after the race, was not happy with his penalty and admitted that he did not do anything wrong. He was given a time penalty for his actions during the race.
Moreover, Lando Norris’s behavior was deemed unsportsmanlike by the officials in their official report. This is something that did not sit well with the young Brit during that time and even McLaren’s CEO, Zak Brown deemed the penalty as absolutely unnecessary. A lot was said about the incident in the F1 paddock.
While the Canadian GP has become a thing of the past, Norris ahead of the British GP, has once again brought it into the limelight and said, “There was certain situations or things that we brought up to support the reasoning for why they should relook into it. Once I re-looked at everything that happened, there was even more reason for there not to be a penalty.”
“I still stand by that everything I did was completely normal and correct and by the book and so on. What they suggest happened, there’s no rule for it. There’s nothing that makes what I did unsportsmanlike. And at the same time, everyone knows that I’m not unsportsmanlike. They have now set a new precedent of what is allowed and what is not allowed and quite a strict one.”

Lando Norris wants to see consistency in the race official’s decision-making
While Lando Norris has made his frustration clear with his penalty at the Gilles-Villeneuve F1 Circuit, keeping the upcoming future in view, he further added, “But we’ll see. I’m sure if they are consistent, which sometimes they’re not, there will be a lot of penalties that are coming up over the next months if people don’t abide by the new regulation, the new rule.”
The 23-year-old feels the race officials are not on their A-game all the time and sometimes that leads to inconsistent decision-making on their part. There are still several races remaining on this year’s F1 calendar and according to Norris, a lot of penalties heading the way of the drivers in the upcoming races.
Lando Norris has spent several seasons at the pinnacle of motor racing and has experienced how the race official’s decision-making has developed over the years. Considering the rapid pace at which the changes are taking place in the sport, how do you see the approach of the race officials changing in the next few seasons?
