After their crash at the Miami Grand Prix, Lando Norris has not been hesitant in criticising AlphaTauri driver Nyck de Vries. Norris, who was pushed wide and dropped to the back of the pack by de Vries, made it apparent that the Dutchman’s errors on the track had become commonplace.

“He’s done that a bit lately, [he] needs to try braking a little bit earlier,” said Lando Norris in a post-race chat with media. The comment was seen as a direct jab at de Vries’ poor start to the F1 season. In fact, de Vries has crashed in every race of the season so far and is still pointless and 19th in the standings.

Nyck De Vries made a successful start to his motorsport career, winning the Formula 2 title in 2019 and the Formula E World title later in 2021. However, the rookie’s transition to F1 has not been easy. His crashes and bad performances have become the norm, and he is struggling to live up to the expectations placed on him following the Italian GP in 2022.

Meanwhile, Norris’ McLaren team is also struggling this season. The team failed to score points at the Miami Grand Prix, and Norris in particular had a terrible race. McLaren brought significant upgrades to the Miami Grand Prix with floor edges and front suspension hoping to make an impact, but none of those seemed to have worked.

“It was just a long race, not enough speed to battle anyone and way out of the points,” Norris said. “We just need to keep trying to do what we are doing. We didn’t do anything wrong, we just have a car that isn’t quick enough at the minute, so [we need to] just keep working hard.”

McLaren are hoping to bounce back at the next race in Imola and doesn’t seem to be an easy task. De Vries, for his part, will need to put his terrible start to the season behind him and concentrate on improving his performance. With each race that goes by without a point, his prospects of survival in the sport dwindle. He is being surpassed by his colleague, Yuki Tsunoda, and has to make significant changes for the benefit of himself and his squad.

DeVries will need to find his pace quickly if he wants to avoid being a one-race wonder. Norris’ criticism of de Vries may have been harsh, but it was a reflection of the Dutchman’s poor start to the F1 season. With both McLaren and AlphaTauri struggling this season, it remains to be seen how both the teams fare.
