In the 2023 Formula 1 season, McLaren has captured the attention and admiration of countless fans with their outstanding race performances, particularly since introducing significant upgrades in Austria. Reflecting on McLaren’s performance this season, their star driver, Lando Norris, acknowledged that he has never felt as close to securing a race victory in the past five years.
Norris made his Formula 1 debut in 2019 and has been relentlessly pursuing his first race victory ever since. In the 2023 season, the British driver has demonstrated remarkable consistency since the upgrades to MCL60. Norris achieved six-point finishes in as many races after the Austrian GP, including a podium at the Hungarian GP. This stands in sharp contrast to the earlier part of the season when the team managed only five top-10 finishes out of eight races before the upgrades.
Lando Norris said he believes he is closer to winning races in Formula 1 than ever before. He viewed this moment as the ideal time to have confidence in his potential to achieve race victories.
“The step forward we have taken makes me feel more confident,….I would also say that I have never been closer to winning as now since I entered Formula 1. So, if there’s a time to believe in being close to winning races, that’s the moment right now,” Norris said, as reported by Motorsports.com.
McLaren to introduce significant updates for Singapore GP
At the Monaco Grand Prix, McLaren secured just one point finish with an eighth-place position, leaving the team with a sense of missed opportunity attributed to strategic choices and errors that hindered their podium ambitions.
McLaren’s team principal, Andrea Stella, has officially confirmed plans for additional upgrades targeted at addressing the weaknesses of the MCL60, scheduled to be implemented for the upcoming Singapore Grand Prix.
McLaren faced a demanding weekend on the low downforce Monaco circuit, underscoring the team’s struggles in such conditions. Stella noted that McLaren has additional upgrades planned for the Singapore Grand Prix and aims to address the weaknesses in the MCL60.
The team’s goal is to make immediate improvements to their current car’s performance while also gathering knowledge and solutions that can be applied to the next season’s car to eliminate these performance deficits. Stella said, “We have a deficit at high speeds, [and] we are already working to resolve it as much as possible on this car – and then eliminate it on the next one. We want to push towards Singapore, where we will bring some new parts.”
