Anyone that watches Formula 1 will be very familiar with the concept of safety cars by now. Currently, two specific car models are used as safety cars: the Aston Martin Vantage, and the Mercedes-AMG GT Black Series. While the SC keeps races in control when needed, it also serves a purpose for these two companies. Apart from the obvious prestige, they also profit from increased sales.

Recently, Lawrence Stroll made a pretty big claim regarding this. Stroll, of course, is chairman of Aston Martin, and owner of the F1 team. Speaking at the Financial Times Future of the Car Summit, he said: “There’s an expression, I didn’t believe it but we’re actually experiencing it: race on Sunday, sell on Monday.” and explained, that, as a result of an AM car serving as a safety car, the company has sold 300-400 of its Vantage F1 edition models.

According to Business Insider, a single AM F1 Vantage edition sells for around $200,000. So, depending on the exact count of the car sales, Aston Martin have made around $60-80 million profit from the model serving as the F1 safety cars. That’s certainly quite a significant amount, considering it has already served as an SC from 2021.

Aston Martin are having the best season of their existence

Aston Martin are the biggest surprise of 2023. Throughout their existence, whether as Force India, Racing Point, or now, Aston Martin, they’ve pretty much been a midfield team. But this has changed, and it’s changed dramatically. They started 2022 in the gutter, but since their first major upgrade package arrived in last year’s Spanish Grand Prix, it’s been an upward trend. Eventually, they finished P7 last season, level on points with Alfa Romeo.

But in 2023, they have been VERY competitive. As it stands, the AMR23 is pretty much the second-best car, especially in the hands of Fernando Alonso. They’ve also been more consistent than their main rivals for P2, Ferrari, and Mercedes. All this is a good sign for the future of the F1 team, and perhaps soon, they will also compete for race wins – and then championships.

Perhaps now, that their on-track success and popularity increases, they will sell even more cars – including the Vantage. They certainly need it, as according to Business Insider, the (AM) group is worth 63% less than they were in October 2018.
