Lewis Hamilton appears beside Martin Luther King Jr in Brazilian football team’s tribute to those who fought against racism

Lewis Hamilton has already engraved his name into the F1 history books as one of the greatest drivers of all time. However, the seven-time World Champion has also made sure to have his voice heard off the track. Hamilton has been extremely vocal regarding a variety of social issues ranging from climate change, sexism and most importantly, racism. Now, the 39-year-old Briton finds himself named alongside the likes of legendary social activists Martin Luther King Jr and Nelson Mandela in a Brazilian football team’s tribute to people who fought for racial equality.
Vasco da Gama, who currently ply their trade in the top division of Brazilian club football, decided to pay a hearty tribute to people who made a mark in the fight against racial injustice. Ahead of their Carioca Serie A match against Sampaio Correa, Vasco da Gama paid tribute to the important personalities involved in the fight against racism by displaying their names on the back of their jerseys.
The list of names included Legendary social rights activists including Martin Luther King Jr. and Anti-Apartheid activist Nelson Mandela. The club also included the name of Lewis Hamilton alongside these greats, paying respect to the immense contribution of the Mercedes driver towards bringing public attention towards the anti-racism cause.

Despite hailing from Britain, Hamilton is an extremely loved personality in Brazil. Hamilton himself has always reciprocated these feelings and his open admiration for Brazilian great Ayrton Senna has become one of the main reasons behind this shared adoration between the Mercedes driver and the people of Brazil. Everytime Hamilton takes the track in Brazil, he has been supported by the Brazilian fans as one of their own.
This relationship was strengthened even further when Hamilton was offered an honorary citizenship of Brazil back in November 2022. This act by the football club is another clear sign of the extreme respect and adoration that Brazilian people hold for Hamilton.
