Lewis Hamilton is an icon of the sport, and one of the greatest drivers in Formula 1 of all time. He is a role model for all in the sport and even for people outside it. Moreover, he has attracted a lot of attention to the sport, from his exploits in fashion and music, but also from his activism.

Hamilton is known for his activism, for things outside the domain of sport and within it. These include racism, pushing for diversity in sport, environmental issues, human rights, discrimination against LGBTQ+ people, and also for his activism for animal rights. He has often discussed wide-ranging issues, from fighting the illegal wildlife trade to calling for the protection of the Amazon rainforest.

Not everyone is fond of Lewis Hamilton‘s outspoken activism, but he does not let negative criticism affect him. He has been especially vocal about the lack of diversity and racism in motorsport and sport, coming from his experience as the first (and only) driver to compete in Formula 1. As for his animal rights activism, it is obvious where that comes from – his deep love for animals.

Back in 2017, Lewis Hamilton revealed to BBC that he follows a vegan lifestyle, with reference to cow ‘production’, he said: “The cruelty is horrible and I don’t necessarily want to support that and I want to live a healthier life.”

But of course, he is no stranger to controversy either. Back in 2015, he was under fire from animal rights groups for his photos showing him cuddling a jaguar cub and a newborn lion. But since that time, he has certainly stepped up his voice against animal cruelty and for their rights. In 2018, he was named PETA person of the year.

Back in 2020, he posted on Instagram: “The food you buy and eat today, at home or in restaurants is coming from places like this. This is why I went vegan, to not support this barbaric behaviour and slaughtering of millions of animals.” adding that it is no different from the slaughter of people.

More recently, Lewis Hamilton has been on a journey through Africa, which he has called tracing his roots. One of these journeys took him to Reteti Animal Sanctuary in Kenya, which he described as ‘the first indigenous, community-owned and run sanctuary in Africa’ and that they take in orphaned animals and release them into the wild when they’re ready. In images posted on Instagram, he is shown petting various animals.

He also has a pet, a British bulldog named Roscoe, who is a mini-celebrity dog in his own right. It is obvious from his actions and his comments that Hamilton does carry a deep love for animals. His visit to Reteti, and highlighting the work they have been doing there just reiterates that fact.
