Lewis Hamilton BREAKS silence on surprise move to Ferrari, claims leaving Mercedes has been ‘the hardest decision ever’
Lewis Hamilton has spent a long tenure of 11 years at Mercedes and now that he is moving to Ferrari at the end of the 2024 season, he has shared a heartfelt statement reminiscing his times as a Silver Arrows racer.
During the usual Formula 1 season break, the fans are often overcome with boredom since they do not have any Grand Prix weekends to look forward to. But the 2023 F1 off-season has been completely unconventional in all the ways possible. The news mill has kept running despite the end of the World Championship campaign since new controversies have kept cropping up in all directions. And the latest of them all is Lewis Hamilton‘s move from Mercedes to Ferrari after 11 years as a Silver Arrows racer.
The dominance that Lewis Hamilton had established over F1 during his tenure between 2014 and 2020 at Mercedes is a legacy that will forever be etched in the history books. Due to his countless achievements such as 104 Grand Prix wins and back to back World Championships too, Lewis is often considered to be at the same level as legends of motorsports like Michael Schumacher and Ayrton Senna by many fans. And Mercedes have always given the Briton a lot of importance since former F1 drivers like Mikka Hakkinen has even said that they will ‘always remain Lewis Hamilton’s team’.
But despite the command Lewis exercised over the team decisions at Mercedes, they have somehow failed to live up to his expectations. In the last two years, Lewis has failed to win a single Grand Prix, and the Mercedes cars deserve a major blame for this disappointing statistic. Thus, Lewis has now decided to leave the Silver Arrows for Ferrari and he has released a statement for the same.
Mercedes has been part of my life since I was 13 years old. It's a place where I have grown up, so making the decision to leave was one of the hardest decisions I have ever had to make. But the time is right for me to take this step and I'm excited to be taking on a new challenge.Lewis Hamilton said, via Mercedes AMG F1 page.
Lewis Hamilton promises that he is ‘100% committed’ to delivering for Mercedes in 2024
In the last couple of seasons, Mercedes have hit an all-time low in terms of results even though their rivals, the Red Bull Racing Team, have only seen new heights of success. The Silver Arrows have not been able to repeat the performances that they delivered during the turbo-hybrid era of F1 when they won 8 back-to-back F1 Constructors’ Championship titles. Because of the incompetent racecars that they have delivered, both Lewis Hamilton and his teammate George Russell have failed to shine in comparison with their Red Bull counterparts.
While Lewis Hamilton is a proud owner of 104 Grand Prix wins, the Briton has not won a single race in the last two years. This statistic alone is quite worrying for all his millions of fans as they wish to see their favorite racer get back to the winning ways. And perhaps, for this reason, Lewis has decided to switch to Ferrari since his current team is not helping him grow, apparently. As he still has a season left with Mercedes, he has promised to work towards their betterment.
I am 100% committed to delivering the best performance I can this season and making my last year with the Silver Arrows, one to remember.Lewis Hamilton said, via his statement on his move to Ferrari.
In other news, Carlos Sainz has officially announced his exit from Ferrari which will happen at the end of 2024. And since Charles Leclerc recently signed a multi-year contract with the Scuderia which does not seem to have an end date, it is apparent that Lewis will be taking Sainz’s place in the Maranello outfit.
