In a recent interview, Mercedes driver Lewis Hamilton delved into the intricacies of his career, reflecting on the past, present, and potential future. At 38 years old, with a stellar track record of 103 victories and 7 World Championships, the question of retirement naturally arises. Hamilton, often considered one of the greatest drivers in the sport’s history, shares his thoughts.

The Briton once asserted he wouldn’t be in F1 in his 40s, but his recent contract extends his stay, challenging his prediction. Acknowledging the complexity of his relationship with the sport, Hamilton admits to underestimating his enduring love for F1. The excitement of duels with rivals, especially teammate George Russell, is a powerful motivator, ensuring he remains deeply engaged and vigilant on the track.

The interview with German magazine Blick takes an intriguing turn when the topic of retirement and family planning arises. Hamilton dismisses the idea of a return to Formula 1 after retirement, emphasizing that when his time in the sport is over, it’s over. Regarding family, particularly children, he candidly states, “Not at the moment. No. I don’t have time for that.” He adds, “I enjoy being an uncle.”

Pressed on the possibility of considering family planning after an eighth world title, Hamilton remains pragmatic. He clarified, “I never said that the eighth title was a stop signal for me. But I’ll only know that when I actually get there.” The decision, he says, will only be made when he achieves the milestone.

Lewis Hamilton claims his future will depend on the W15

The Briton hasn’t won a race since 2021, when Max Verstappen denied him the chance of winning his eighth world title on a contentious last lap. The Mercedes since has been experiencing a downward fall of their performance, dulling Hamilton’s chances for a title hunt. He jokes that his future will depend on their next year’s car, saying, “They say it. Without a great car, you can hardly achieve the big goals in Formula 1. No one.”

Despite the hurdles presented by the current challenger, the W14, Hamilton remains optimistic. He shares the elation of clinching a pole position in Budapest after a considerable lapse. He is hopeful that the wealth of data amassed over the year will have a favorable influence on the forthcoming performance of the new model, the W15.

As the interview draws to a close, Hamilton underscores the critical role of a competitive car in achieving significant goals in Formula 1. The uncertainty surrounding his retirement, combined with his unwavering commitment to the sport, leaves fans and enthusiasts eagerly awaiting the next chapter in the remarkable career of Sir Lewis Hamilton.
