Lewis Hamilton’s outing at Las Vegas was far from ideal, as he finished only 7th in the Grand Prix after being eliminated in Q2. The 7x World Champion was involved in the multiple-car fiasco at the beginning of the race, which lost him valuable positions at turn 1.
Hamilton suffered another problem as he made major contact with rookie Oscar Piastri further into the race. The Briton incurred a puncture from the incident and tumbled down the order. Hamilton managed an incredible recovery drive to 7th place, but claimed that a podium was on the cards were it not for the setbacks.
I’m grateful to get a couple of points at least. But would have been a podium for sure.Lewis Hamilton said, as reported by racefans.net
To add to a miserable weekend for Hamilton, Sergio Perez scored a P3, with 15 points added to his championship tally. This meant the fight for second place in the Drivers’ Championship slipped away from Hamilton’s hands, securing the spot for Sergio Perez after a questionable season.
Lewis Hamilton defends Las Vegas GP, says it proved critics wrong
The Las Vegas Grand Prix has been riddled with controversy from its inception. Many accused the circuit of being uncompetitive, claiming the long straights with sharp corners would make it a DRS battle all over. Further criticism came when fans claimed the racing action would not be up to the standards of Formula One at all, saying F1 has focused more on the spectacle than the sport.
The Saturday Grand Prix swiftly silenced critics with early chaos. Safety cars, race-spanning battles, and strategic maneuvers delivered as much excitement as the recent Singapore Grand Prix. Lewis Hamilton likened it to the Azerbaijan GP but considered it even better, citing numerous overtaking chances on the track. He asserted the race effectively proved critics wrong.
Lots of great overtaking opportunities and I think for all those who were so negative about the weekend, saying it was all about show blah blah blah, I think Vegas proved them wrong.Lewis Hamilton said, as reported by skysports.com
During the night race, Charles Leclerc, Max Verstappen, and Sergio Perez battled for the lead. Despite an unfortunate safety car incident, Verstappen secured the victory. Leclerc, disappointed, clinched P2, while Perez, starting 11th, finished third.
