Lewis Hamilton persistent that George Russell will choose to receive the tow in Monza
George Russell and Lewis Hamilton
Lewis Hamilton and George Russell have put fourth an incredible performance with the machinery that they have had this year. Back during the pre-season testing days, Mercedes had come with a car with no side pods. It was a design that was poised to wipe out the competition after their embarrassing defeat in Abu Dhabi the year before where Max Verstappen beat Lewis Hamilton on the last lap. However, this didn’t seem to be the case.
The 2022 Mercedes challenger seemed to have taken a step back when it came to performance compared to rivals Red Bull and Ferrari. Their results made it clear that they were the third best car on the grid which was a bittersweet thing to swallow.
Although this didn’t stop them from and both Lewis Hamilton and George Russell have done a phenomenal job this season. Lewis’s constant streak of podiums and George’s record of finishing every race in the top 5 has paid dividends. This means that the British pair are not very far away from grabbing p2 in the constructors from Ferrari.
With the Monza race weekend underway, Lewis Hamilton revealed that it was George Russell’s choice to either give or receive a tow. On a track where a tow can make a massive difference, it is obvious as to what the driver must have chosen and even Lewis knows it. Hamilton was asked about the stats of who will give whom a tow during qualifying and this is what he had to say.
“Most likely he’ll choose to go behind,” Lewis Hamilton on George Russell
Lewis further explained the situation and how he will approach it. “Well it’s George’ turn to choose this weekend whether he goes first or second, so most likely he’ll choose to go behind me. So I’ll just do my normal program and he’ll get a tow,” he said.
George Russell is currently 20 points ahead of Lewis Hamilton in the driver’s championship as he sits in 4th place while the 7 time world champion currently sits in 6th place behind Ferrari’s Carlos Sainz. It will be interesting to see who comes out on top in this teammate battle at Mercedes in the remainder of the season as all is to play for and that Lewis is deadly on the circuits which F1 will be racing at in the last quarter of this season.
