“I think it’s all a bit childish,” Ralf Schumacher hits out at Lewis Hamilton and Sebastian Vettel over defying FIA rules

Formula 1 introduced new rules, new tyres and new race directors ahead of the season. All the constructors and drivers suspected that these are the only changes they have to adapt coming into a new season. However, Formula 1 keeps on evolving race weekend by race weekend. The Miami Grand Prix itself is the result of the evolution of the sport and coming into the weekend, a new rule has been drafted by the Formula 1 race director, Niels Wittich.

The race director notes ahead of the Miami Grand Prix indicated that each driver on the grid are prohibited from wearing any kind of Jewellery inside the car. Also, mentioned that each driver should be equipped with fire-resistant underwear. The former world champions on the grid, Lewis Hamilton and Sebastian Vettel ensured that their voices are heard through their actions by the FIA. Former racing driver, Ralf Schumacher commented on this by saying “To be honest, I think it’s all a bit childish. They should be in favour (of the rules) because it’s about safety.”

Sebastian Vettel and Lewis Hamilton

The actions of the former world champions echoed through the paddock ahead of the weekend. Lewis Hamilton stood firm with his belief that jewellery can be worn while driving and it’s a drivers personal decision. In his media interview, the Brit wore excessive jewellery to shine light on the subject. Meanwhile, inside the pit lane Sebastian Vettel wore his underpants over his racing suit to joke about the FIA instructions over usage of non-flammable underwear only.

Ralf Schumacher addressed this further by saying “The drivers who are now driving in Formula 3 and Formula 4 should also know and see that the big drivers are sticking to it. It’s mainly about their own safety and it’s crazy that such experienced people, who have seen so many accidents, make fun of them in this way.”

The German also commented on how he is against the drivers fooling around with race director’s rules. So far no driver has been penalised for any such actions, but has initiated the talks in the paddock. Hamilton said speaking to the press that he is happy to sit out the Miami Grand Prix, if the jewellery ban rules him out. The world of Formula 1 does not stop for anyone, and we hope to see the drivers and the FIA reach a common ground.
