Lewis Hamilton has always been active in the public forum. He has always used his platform, and his high status as a Formula 1 driver to stand up for many issues plaguing society – for diversity in motorsport, human and animal rights, and has also spoken against discrimination against the LGBTQ+ community.
In July 2021, with his Mission 44 initiative, Lewis Hamilton also pledged 20 million of his own personal wealth in order to support the organization’s work in various charitable endeavours. Not only is he one of the greatest Formula 1 and racing drivers of all time, but also a role model to upcoming drivers and people in general.
The effects of the Russian invasion of Ukraine have been felt all the world over, but the suffering has been caused no other place more than Ukraine itself. Families have been displaced and forced to leave their homes for foreign lands. Recently, Lewis Hamilton made a touching gesture towards a refugee 8-year-old Ukrainian refugee.
8-year-old Roman was delighted by receiving gifts from his hero

Recently, correspondents from The Mirror met up with an 8-year-old Ukrainian boy (now residing in Poland) to hand him a package from Lewis Hamilton. The package included a cap signed by the seven-time world champion, F1 monopoly, a model of Hamilton’s helmet and also a note praising young Roman as an ‘amazing supporter.’
Five months earlier, Roman had told reporters that he wanted to be a racing driver and that he loves watching Grands Prix, with his mother Ivanna adding that he likes Lewis Hamilton. Now mother and son have settled in Poland, but father Volodymyr remains behind in Ukraine fighting Russian forces. Recently, the family had a reunion at the border village Shehyni when Volodymyr was granted leave.
We will be hoping that the family are permanently reunited soon and that when everything is over they can finally return to their homeland as they must be longing to. It is certainly a nice gesture from Lewis Hamilton, and among a list of many endeavours that he undertakes on a regular basis.
In a week, Formula 1 returns at the Belgian Grand Prix. It is also where the ‘porpoising’ technical directive will go into place. The road to its enforcement was a controversial one, with Mercedes obviously in support, but Ferrari and Red Bull were not happy with it. Hamilton would hope that the car will gain a performance boost from the directive and that he can perhaps finally compete for victory now.
