Formula One has been periodically updated every few years to match the current developments and changes just as technological advancements are made that can benefit the sport. F1 recently had such a regulation change in 2022, which significantly has brought cars even closer to the ground.
The regulation keeps cars no more than sixty millimeters above the ground as the cars have gotten even larger, keeping risks at bay. Mercedes, the team of Lewis Hamilton, technical director James Allison have expressed their annoyance at the regulation, deeming it an “irritation” for car development. Allison feels that having a larger room for ride height keeps space for development.
I'm sure I can't stop talking about this, because it's a big irritation point for me. Personally, I don't think it's a good development. I don't think it's good that the cars are so close to the ground when they leave the garage. You have a person who wins the championship by one of the biggest margins ever, and he has every reason to be in love with his car, but I doubt he would say it's a fine machine.Allison said, as reported by Motorsports.com.
The cars have undergone major changes in 2022 and will be facing further revamping in 2026 as new regulations roll in. Cars also will be gradually making the shift to sustainable sources of power, such as hydrogen or fully-electric vehicles for the sport.
Toto Wolff explains changes made to the Mercedes W15
Mercedes is developing a new challenger for 2024, the W15. Mercedes has not seen a single race in 2023, and only one in the past two seasons combined. After a difficult period for the team, they plan to revamp completely the design for their 2024 vehicle.
After the departure of Mike Elliott, who designed the ineffective concept, Mercedes took major steps in the development of W15. Toto Wolff revealed that nearly every compoent had been revised, giving them a chance to compete in 2024.
We're changing the concept, we're completely moving away from how we laid out the chassis, the weight distribution, the air flow. Literally, there's almost every component being changed, because only by doing that, I think we have a chance.
Mercedes has a strong driver line-up for 2024 with Lewis Hamilton and George Russell, and with a good car, they could finally come back for redemption up against Red Bull. Mercedes is still reeling from the 2021 Drivers’ Championship loss to their rival, having success slip away from them after the controversial race.
