Liam Lawson received a chance to show off his talents this season as the youngster made his debut in Formula 1 following Daniel Ricciardo’s injury at the Dutch GP. Lawson, the reserve driver at AlphaTauri, jumped into the car and quickly garnered attention with his stellar performances in the Red Bull ‘B’ team. Liam Lawson went on to appear in 5 Grands Prix and managed to bag a point finish in only his third race in the Championship at Singapore.

Many anticipated a big shake-up in AlphaTauri’s line-up for 2024 considering the 21-year-old’s stellar performance. However, AlphaTauri later revealed their line-up to be unchanged, which meant that Daniel Ricciardo and Yuki Tsunoda retained their seats on the team for 2024.

Lawson recently appeared on the ‘Beyond the Grid Podcast’ and finally revealed his thoughts on the announcement and on AlphaTauri’s decision to not offer the Kiwi driver a seat in 2024. The driver claimed (as reported by Speedcafe) to understand the circumstances that led to the team’s ultimate decision.

What’s potentially helped through each scenario is, yes, it’s extremely frustrating, but I’ve been able to sit there and go ‘I can understand at the time of this decision why this makes sense'.You have an option of somebody who’s never been in Formula 1 to jump in mid-season or somebody who’s very experienced in Formula 1 and won races.

Liam Lawson’s hilarious but horrific incident at the Italian Grand Prix

In a candid moment on The Project, young Kiwi driver Liam Lawson shared a memorable yet humorous incident from the Italian Grand Prix, only his second-ever Formula 1 race. Known for his impressive stint at the Singapore GP where he bested Max Verstappen in qualifying, resulting in the Dutchman’s early exit from the session, Liam Lawson recounted his short stint as an F1 driver with a particularly horrific incident.

During the Italian GP at Monza, Lawson claimed to have encountered an unexpected mishap involving his ‘drinks tube.’ Recounting the incident, Lawson mentioned how his drink tube was stuck inside his nose.

We do have a drink tube. For me, it's a new thing; I never had that before. I swear, the first time I used it in Italy, I didn't adjust the tube or anything, and I just left it how it was in the helmet, and when I went to use it, it got stuck in my nose.

Lawson also claimed to have lightheartedly laughed off the incident following the Grand Prix. While Lawson will begin the 2024 season without a full-time drive, many anticipate Red Bull’s classic ‘mid-season driver switch’ to play a part in the Kiwi’s return to the track. It will be interesting to see how AlphaTauri decide to utilize the youngster’s talent in the 2024 season.
